The Text

The Battle of Maldon is a fragment of 325 lines whose beginning and end are lost. The poem is preserved in a 18th-century copy from a lost manuscript. The battle between Vikings and Saxons took place near Maldon, Essex in 991. The poem was composed around 995, but nothing is known about its author.
