The Author

Wulfstan was born about 960. Nothing is known about his earlier life. He was bishop of London (996-1002) and archbishop of York (1002-1023) and simultaneously bishop of Worcester (1002-1016). In 1022 he reformed the monastery of St. Peter's, Gloucester. He died in 1023 and was buried at Ely. He wrote homilies, tracts and law codes for Ethelred and Cnut. In his most famous homily "Sermo Lupi ad Anglos" he describes the desolation of the country brought about by the Danish raids and calls for repentance and reformation.
